AIP + my healing journey

Hi I'm Hannah. I have two rambunctious little boys and an incredible husband, I'm a designer and artist, and I'm the food enthusiast behind Nourish Me Free. I started Nourish Me Free as a way to merge my journey with autoimmunity and my passion for a balanced and holistic healing approach to life. Through sharing my nourishing recipes as I navigate the autoimmune protocol diet (AIP), I hope that you may be empowered on your health journey too.

I have always prioritised my health. I am an avid runner, lover of skateboarding, a seeker of the outdoors, a health conscious eater who rarely ate processed foods and was predominantly plant-based, so in my mind I was very healthy.

Following a worsening cold that I couldn't shake after five months, I gradually struggled to get out of bed due to exhaustion, joint pain and stiffness. I became acutely aware that I was not well. Living what I considered was a very healthy life, my diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis came as a surprise.

I initially controlled my disease through medication, but the struggle with the numerous side effects became detrimental to other areas of my health. With the support of my doctors I engaged the help of a qualified nutritionist, and I am now managing to control my disease through diet, sleep and less stress. This may change at any time and medication may be the best option at that time, but knowing I can support my health naturally is an empowering thing and something I have much gratitude for.

What I have learnt on my journey so far?

Not all food is for everyone, certain foods are detrimental to my health. Pregnancy can kick off and disguise an underlying health concern. Low stress and sleep are healers. Balancing medication and their accompanying side effects are a trade off, and not a simple decision. An open minded medical team is crucial for support.

My kitchen

Baking has always been a love for me (be it successful or not!) so navigating a new way of cooking with the autoimmune protocol was initially daunting. If you are a fellow autoimmune patient, someone with allergies and dietary restrictions, or simply someone looking for simple delicious meals then I hope you find some inspiration and enjoyment from Nourish Me Free!
